  • Applying an anthropological perspective in the sociology and psychology classroom, can enhance the total learning experience. Since anthropology is the study of humanity, throughout all times and in all places, its inclusion brings a new dimension to teaching related disciplines. This all-encompassing view can be applied to the teaching of sociology and psychology. Traditionally, much of the historical study of social science begins with 19th century western thought.  Applying an anthropological perspective drastically expands the timeline! This approach engenders a new track of thinking that poses fresh questions in the classroom.

Randolph Harrison presents, “Holistic Learning in the Social Sciences”
  • Holistic Learning is “a philosophy of education based on the premise that each person find identity, meaning, and purpose in life through connections to the community, to the natural world, and to humanitarian values such as compassion and peace.”1   In an era when higher education is often marketed as a mean for gaining desirable employment and improved financial status to the exclusion of all else, Holistic Learning captures the importance of the myriad other advantages of becoming an educated person. While active learning strategies improve higher order thinking skills as outlined in Bloom’s Taxonomy,2  Holistic Learning Theory provides opportunities to find deep and personal motivations for academic work. In correlational, experimental, and longitudinal studies, a purpose for learning predicted or caused more effective academic self-regulation.
