We had beautiful weather in Asheville for the November 2-4, 2016 conference, and enjoyed the gorgeous setting as much as we enjoyed the conference programming.
The theme this year, "Mystery Classroom Theatre: Seeing and Responding to Hidden Student Populations in the Community College Classroom" helped us to take a look beyond the academics of our classrooms to know our students on a deeper level.
We'd like to extend our thanks to our presenters for providing such wonderful conference sessions. Jean Cahoon and Brook Cathey from Pitt Community College presented "Examining Mental Health Issues in the Classroom." Porscha Orndorf from AB Tech, who is also our new President, talked with us about "Trans* Students in the Classroom." Finally, Jim McAlhaney from South Piedmont Community College presented on "Mindfulness in the Classroom" and also led us in a mindfulness meditation before breaking for the day on Thursday. On Friday, we had a thought provoking roundtable discussion on "Poverty in the Classroom" that helped to highlight more of the issues that our students are facing.
We would also like to thank our sponsors. Norton, Pearson, Macmillan, and McGraw-Hill provided our lunch, welcome reception, and conference snacks and beverages. Their generosity made this a wonderful conference!
The Hilton Garden Inn Asheville Downtown was the setting for our 2016 conference, and it was gorgeous! Situated in downtown Asheville, it was close to everything and perfectly placed for enjoying the sights of our host city. The event staff, led by Jon Hessler, went above and beyond to make our conference experience smooth and enjoyable. We thank them for their support!
We have opened registration for the 2017 NCCCSPA Annual Conference, which will return to Kill Devil Hills and the Ramada Plaza Nags Head Oceanfront. This location is right on the ocean and a gem of the Outer Banks.
Please consider submitting an entry to our Call for Proposals for the 2017 conference. For the first time we have two presentation options for you to consider. We have our regular Conference Session option, but are adding a Poster Presentation to our conference next year as well. What can you contribute to the conference? We want to hear from you!
Even more exciting, though, is the addition of a conference scholarship that will provide conference registration and two nights accommodations to one lucky applicant. The Johnny Underwood Legacy Scholarship was announce at our conference this year in honor of Johnny Underwood, who has served the NCCCSPA twice as president and since 1999 in many leadership capacities. It is in his honor that we invite you to apply for the scholarship. The deadline for both the Call for Proposals and the Conference Scholarship are February 10, 2017.
How exciting is this?! We're in deep planning mode for the 2017 conference, and will continue to post details as they are confirmed. In the meantime, visit our Past Conferences page and take a look at the materials from the 2016 conference and other previous conference meetings.
Thanks to everyone for your continued support of the NCCCSPA! We couldn't do this without you.
